In order to apply for a residence permit or renewal in Sri Lanka, foreign nationals are now required to visit the Health Assessment Center in Colombo to complete a health exam and sign up for health insurance (total cost of about $75). Health tests include tuberculosis, malaria, HIV/AIDS, and filariasis screenings. As this is implemented with immediate effect, employers are instructed to monitor foreign nationals and make sure they complete the exam and obtain the health plan within 7 days of arrival in Sri Lanka. The new policy may add up to 2 days to the application process for a residence permit. Without the exam and health insurance, residence permit and renewal applications will not be accepted.
