The Swiss federal council announced it will maintain the transitional provisions of Protocol III until 31 December 2021, which extended to Croatian nationals the Agreement on Free Movement of Persons (FMPA) between Switzerland and the European Union.

People from Croatia benefit from visa-free entry and can stay in Switzerland for up to three months. However, special transitional provisions apply to the taking up of gainful employment in Switzerland and the provision of services. For example, Croatian nationals are only allowed to take up gainful employment if a labor market test is in place, salary and working conditions are considered and within the framework of the fixed annual quotas.

The FMPA with transitional provisions has applied to Croatian nationals since 1 January 2017, and from 1 January 2019 on an amended legislation to extend the transitional period will enter into force.
